Twig Star Tutorial

I love old, rustic decor for my home and Christmas is the perfect time to let my imagination run wild.  Yesterday, I was shopping and saw a beautiful twig star ornament.  It was $8.  I looked at the construction and decided that I could make the same twig star for free.  This is also a perfect opportunity for me to do my first tutorial!  This project is ideal for Imperfectly Crafty because this star is meant to be imperfect.  It was a beautiful day in Western North Carolina so I enjoyed the weather and did this whole project outside.
First, you will need to gather some twigs.  I looked for pencil sized, mostly straight branches that were laying on the ground.  This step took all of 3 minutes.  These are the ones I chose.
You will also need at mitre saw ( I call it the chop saw and my husband rolls his eyes), hot glue gun, hot glue and a tape measure.  CAUTION- You need safety glasses as working with the saw is dangerous.  Please be careful.
Depending on how big you want your star, you need to make a frame.  I took the straight, thick twigs and cut 5 in 9" lengths. I placed these pieces in a star shape-just like you would draw it.  Then, glued these piences together.
Now you want to fill the spaces.  To do this, i cut different lenghts of the twigs and started placing them in the spaces, sort of like a puzzle.  Once I decided the way I wanted them I glued them in.  Now make note that some of the pieces will need to be glued on the top and some on the bottom due to the width of the frame pieces.
Keep filling in the spaces with glue and twigs until you are left with something like this.
Now you will want to put a border on the star to cover up where you glued.  What I did was cut a few more 9" pieces and covered the ends of the twigs.
Imperfection!  I love it.  Here is my finished project, displayed in my home.
This project took about an hour and was very easy and FREE.  The only thing I would have done differently is to drag two extension cords to my work surface, one for the saw and one for the glue gun.    I only had one and kept having to unplug the glue gun to saw more twigs.
Thank you for visiting us again and stay tuned for more easy, imperfect projects.

  2. I thought this tutorial was excellent. You gave very detailed instructions, the pictures were perfect to go with the instructions and it was short and sweet. I like that you did not go off into theories, Philosophies and the history of craft. Also, this star idea is not necessarily just for the holidays and displaying the star on a cutting board brings that point home very well. I am very excited to keep following your craft inspirations and I know that you will do well. You are an inspiration!
